A specialist referral is valid for 3 months while a referral from a GP is valid for one year or indefinitely (depending on what the GP stipulates on the referral). We prefer not to receive indefinite referrals as it is best to keep your current GP involved in your child’s care. The referral period starts from the date that it is first used by the specialist.

You do not have to have a referral to see one of the specialists at The Children’s Clinic. However, a detailed referral allows us to ensure that you are booked in with the correct specialist who has the expertise in your child’s specific medical needs. It also allows us to triage more urgent cases for priority cancellation slots. Furthermore, you require a valid referral to allow us to claim a Medicare rebate on your behalf. Without a valid referral your out of pocket cost for the appointment will be 100% of the consultation fee.

If you are unsure, it is important to check the status of your referral well in advance of your specialist appointment at The Children’s Clinic. If your child has already been seen at The Children’s Clinic you can check the validity of your referral by contacting us at The Children’s Clinic (info@thechildrensclinic.com.au) and we can provide information whether you need a new referral for your upcoming appointment.

There are different fees for “new” consultations and follow-up consultations, as well as for different complexity of cases. This corresponds to the different Medicare item numbers allocated for these different types of consultations. For the same reason, you may be charged a “new” consultation fee even though you are seeing the same doctor as follow-up if this visit is accompanied by a new referral letter.
