He is an internationally renowned paediatric gastroenterologist who specialises in all aspects of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, nutritional and liver conditions, as well as in paediatric gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterology Association. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with the Clara Myers Prize in Paediatrics and started gastroenterology training at Sydney Children’s Hospital. He completed his internship and worked as a specialist consultant at the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He received various international and national awards in clinical and research arenas during that time. On return to Sydney, he was awarded a PhD for his contributions to research in cystic fibrosis and pancreatic diseases and also received the Dean’s Rising Star Award (UNSW Medicine). A/Prof Ooi is a world-leading expert in his research fields of cystic fibrosis, paediatric pancreatic diseases and the gut microbiome. As evidence of his impact, he has >200 publications and has received significant research funding including from NHMRC (Australia) and NIH (USA).
